Understanding the Most Common Types of Skin Cancer

Skin cancer, one of the most prevalent forms of cancer, presents in various types. Each type varies in severity, appearance, and treatment approach. At Dermatology Associates of Birmingham, our experienced team is well-versed in diagnosing, treating, and providing referrals for the different forms of skin cancer. Here, we discuss the most common types:

types of skin cancer

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer that is usually caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight. These skin cancers are slow growing and rarely spreads to other parts of the body. BCC’s can have varying appearances ranging from red patches, open sores, or even shiny bumps. Treatment options include but are not limited to surgical removal, cryosurgery, radiation, topical medications and electrodesiccation.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

Squamous cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer made up abnormal growth of squamous cells. Squamous cell carcinoma presentations include red scaly patches, open sores, and tender raised warty growths. Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is usually not life-threatening if treated early. But if it’s not treated, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin can grow large or spread to other parts of the body. Treatment options may include surgical removal, radiation, cryosurgery, topical medications and electrodesiccation.

Melanoma

Malignant melanoma is a form of skin cancer that begins in cells known as melanocytes. While it is less common than basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), this skin cancer is more dangerous because of its ability to spread to other organs more rapidly if it is not treated at an early stage. Treatment depends on the stage of this skin cancer. Options for treatment include surgical removal, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiation.
